![]() ![]() The Burnside, one of the best carbines of the Civil War, was designed by one of its worst generals. The finish on the barrel is quite good on the exterior. The bore is very good with clear lands and grooves and a bright finish, with just small spots of oxidation. Overall metalwork condition is good, though repeated cleaning has removed most of the finish on the action, and there is evidence of light pitting. The marking on the lock plate is partially worn off, but originally would have read:Īdditionally, it is marked CAST STEEL 1862 on the barrel in front of the sight. This example, known as the fifth model, has a patent date of 1856 and retains some of the original blue on the barrel, with a clean wood stock and comes complete with saddle ring. 54 caliber is offered in very good collectible condition.
